If your heating has reached the end and you are staring at four different types of system, this page is the one that sorts out which one you actually want before anyone quotes you anything.
Plumbing Pros installs and replaces heating systems across Easton, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Wilson and the Lehigh Valley, and across Warren County, New Jersey.
Four options, and how we choose between them
A gas furnace is the default in most of Easton. It is the cheapest to install where a gas main and ductwork already exist, and it heats fast. See furnace installation.
A boiler is the answer if the house already has radiators or baseboard and no ductwork. Ripping out a working hydronic system to fit ducts is almost never worth it. See boiler installation.
A heat pump heats and cools with one system and costs less to run than oil or propane. It needs a backup heat source for the coldest nights here, and that backup has to be specified properly rather than assumed. See heat pumps.
Ductless mini splits suit houses with no ductwork, additions, and rooms that were never comfortable. They also give you cooling as a side effect. See ductless mini splits.
The question that decides most of it
What are you burning now, and what is available at the property?
On natural gas with good ductwork, a furnace is usually the straightforward answer. On oil or propane, a heat pump often makes a real difference to the running cost and is worth pricing properly rather than dismissing. With radiators and no ducts, you are choosing between a boiler and mini splits. Off the gas main entirely, the shortlist changes again.
Tell us the fuel when you call and we arrive with the right conversation ready.
Sizing, and why the old number is not the answer
The most common mistake in heating replacement is fitting the same size system that came out. Houses change. Windows get replaced, insulation gets added, additions get built. An oversized system short cycles, wears out sooner and leaves the house feeling uneven.
We size off the building as it is now, not off the label on the old unit.
What it costs
The $85 diagnostic applies if we are diagnosing a fault first, waived for service plan members. Replacement pricing depends on the system type, the fuel, the state of the ductwork or piping and the electrical supply. You get the number before anything is ordered. Financing through Wisetack runs from $500 to $65,000 for approved applicants.
Common questions
Should I switch from oil to a heat pump?
Often worth pricing, especially on properties with no gas main. We will show you the install cost and be straight about the backup heat you will still need in January.
Can I replace heating without touching my air conditioning?
Yes, though if both are near the end it is usually cheaper to do them together because the labour overlaps.
Do I have to replace my ductwork too?
Not usually. We check whether the existing ducts can carry the new system before quoting, because a new furnace on undersized ducts underperforms from day one. See ductwork.
How long will I be without heat?
A planned swap is normally a single day. We schedule replacements outside a cold snap wherever possible, which is the argument for doing it in autumn rather than January.
