An air conditioner that gets serviced every spring will outlast one that does not, usually by years, and it will cost less to run in between. This is the least glamorous thing we do and it is the one that saves people the most money.

What a real AC tune up covers

• Refrigerant charge and pressures. A system low on refrigerant has a leak. Topping it up without finding the leak is money poured out of the same hole, and we will tell you which you are dealing with.
• The condenser coil, cleaned. This is the outdoor unit and it is the single biggest efficiency win. A coil packed with grass clippings and cottonwood makes the compressor work far harder than it should.
• The evaporator coil, checked for dirt and icing
• Capacitors and contactors, measured rather than glanced at. A capacitor that is out of spec but still working is the most predictable failure in air conditioning, and it always fails on the hottest day
• The condensate drain and pan, cleared. A blocked drain is cheap to prevent and expensive once it finds a ceiling
• The blower motor and wheel, plus the filter
• Airflow and static pressure
• Thermostat calibration and operation
• Electrical connections, tightened and checked for heat damage

The capacitor point, because it matters

Most emergency no cooling calls in July are a failed capacitor. It is a small, inexpensive part. Measured during a spring tune up, a weak one gets replaced at a normal rate on a normal weekday. Left alone, it fails at the worst possible moment and the same repair carries our $195 emergency and weekend dispatch fee on top.

That is the whole argument for maintenance in one part.

When to book

Spring, before the first hot spell. Same logic as heating: if we find something you have time to deal with it calmly, and you are not competing for an appointment with everyone else whose system just quit.

What it costs

Our diagnostic and service call fee is $85, waived for service plan members. On a plan the annual visit is included.

What you can do yourself

• Change the filter every one to three months. Restricted airflow is behind a large share of cooling faults, including frozen coils
• Keep two feet clear around the outdoor unit. Cut back shrubs, move the bins, clear the leaves
• Rinse the outdoor coil gently with a hose from the inside out, with the power off. Gently. Fins bend easily and bent fins restrict airflow
• Check the condensate drain runs freely
• If the coil ices up: switch cooling off, leave the fan running to thaw it, and call. Do not chip at it

Common questions

How often should air conditioning be serviced?

Once a year, in spring. A heat pump, which runs in both seasons, is worth doing twice.

My system works fine. Do I need this?

That is the point. Maintenance finds the capacitor that is drifting out of spec and the coil that is choking, before either becomes an emergency in a heat wave.

Will it lower my electricity bill?

A clean condenser coil and a correct refrigerant charge both reduce how hard the system works. How much you save depends on how dirty it was, and we are not going to promise you a number we cannot measure.

Does maintenance protect my warranty?

Frequently yes. Most manufacturers require documented annual maintenance and can decline a claim without it. Keep the records.
