What we charge, published up front

• Diagnostic fee: $85. Waived for members of our service plans.

You are told the repair price after the diagnosis and before any work starts. A job at ten at night on a Saturday costs more than the same job on a Tuesday morning, and we would rather you knew that from a web page than found it out on an invoice.

What counts as an emergency

Not everything needs a call tonight, and we will tell you honestly when something can wait until morning at the normal rate.

Call straight away for:

• No heat in freezing weather, particularly with infants, older adults or anyone with a medical condition in the house
• No cooling during a heat advisory, for the same reason. Heat is a genuine health risk, not just discomfort
• A burning smell from the furnace or air handler. Shut it off at the breaker first
• A carbon monoxide alarm. Get everyone outside and call 911 before you call us
• A gas smell. Leave the house, then call your gas utility from outside. Once they have made it safe, we will deal with the equipment
• Water pouring from the indoor unit, which is usually a blocked condensate drain and gets expensive once it reaches a ceiling
• A breaker that keeps tripping. Stop resetting it. A repeated trip is an electrical fault

Usually fine until morning:

• A thermostat that has lost its display but the system still runs
• One room that is uncomfortable while the rest of the house is fine
• A system that is noisy but still heating or cooling normally
• A frozen coil, once you have switched cooling off and left the fan running to thaw it

What to do before we arrive

• No cooling: turn the cooling off and leave the fan on. If the coil has iced, that thaws it without adding moisture. Do not chip at the ice.
• No heat: check the thermostat batteries and the furnace switch, which looks like a light switch near the unit and gets knocked off more often than anyone expects. Check the filter too.
• Burning smell: shut the system off at the breaker and leave it off.
• Water around the unit: switch the system off so it stops producing condensate, and put a towel down.

None of that is us avoiding a call out. If one of those solves it, you have saved a fee, and we would rather tell you than not.

Those are not HVAC calls first. Gas smell: leave the house and call your utility from outside. Carbon monoxide alarm: everyone outside and call 911. Call us once the property is safe and we will deal with the equipment.
