The converted summer cottage
Mountain Lake is the largest natural glacial lake in Warren County, 122 acres and around 12,000 years old, and a good number of the houses around it started life as summer cottages. Many have since been winterised and lived in year round.
That conversion is where the problems come from, and they are consistent enough that we can usually predict them before we arrive.
Heating was added to a building never designed for winter. A cottage built for July does not have the insulation, the crawl space detailing or the wall construction of a house built for January. Whatever system was fitted afterwards is frequently working against the building rather than with it.
The system is often undersized, or oversized to compensate. When the real problem is heat loss through an uninsulated floor, adding a bigger furnace treats the symptom and raises the running cost permanently.
Cold floors are the giveaway. If the room is warm at head height and the floor is cold, that is usually an unconditioned crawl space rather than a heating fault, and it is worth knowing before anyone quotes you new equipment.
We would rather find the heat loss and tell you than sell you a larger system to overcome it.
High ground
Liberty sits around 748 feet, higher than anywhere else we serve in the county. It runs colder and it holds snow longer, which is worth factoring in when deciding whether a system has one more winter in it.

Usually not. In a converted cottage that is nearly always the crawl space. We will check before recommending equipment.

In a winterised summer building, typically heat loss rather than the system. Bigger equipment makes that worse, not better.
